IOM Mongolia organized a three-day joint training session on disaster responses with NEMA
Ulaanbaatar - From 16 April to 18 April 2025, IOM Mongolia conducted a training session on disaster risk management and emergency responses, titled “IOM-NEMA Joint Training for Municipal Emergency Officials.” This event was organized in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency of Mongolia (NEMA). The training was part of the project “Addressing Climate Change-Induced Human Mobility in Mongolia,” which is funded by the IOM Development Fund (IOMDF).
65 officials from Capital city emergency Management agency, and heads of sections from districts participated in the training.
The first day of the training focused on three main topics: strengthening community-based disaster risk management, methodologies for conducting training sessions for citizens, and methodologies aimed at children with special programmes. “Citizens need to be aware and informed about their responsibility and increase their participation, cooperating with public organizations to reduce disaster risks,” said Munkhtuya D., lecturer of the training and consultant at IOM Mongolia. The training’s emphasis on citizen engagement highlighted the critical role of community involvement in disaster risk management.
On the second day, participants explored more detailed topics, including earthquake preparedness, camp management, climate change and migration, and fire hazard prevention. Tsogtbayar M., an official from NEMA, provided seven tips for earthquake preparation during his lecture.
On the third day of the training, it focused on first aid, including principle of emergency actions, CPR practice for unconsciousness and non-breathing.
The training is expected to improve the knowledge and skills of specialists in charge of disaster protection training and prevention at the Capital city Emergency Management Agency and educate the leadership, employees, officers, and citizens of the emergency commissions, disaster protection agencies, professional units, volunteer groups, humanitarian organizations, and legal entities of the 9 districts of the capital city on protecting human life, health, property, environment, and livestock from disasters.
Furthermore, during the training, Daniel Sam, Chief of Mission a.i. of IOM Mongolia, reinforced the partnership between IOM and NEMA, discussing recent initiatives and future collaborations related to community-based disaster risk management training. IOM Mongolia also presented a photo catalog from the climate change photography competition held the previous year to NEMA.
