Strengthening counter-trafficking efforts through MigApp
Ulaanbaatar - Every year thousands of Mongolian men, women, and children migrate abroad; for many of these migrants, limited information and the difficulty of navigating services in a new country push them to seek information and services from unauthorized sources, putting them at risk of human trafficking.
Within IOM’s goal of ensuring safe migration for all, IOM Mongolia has customized MigApp, an IOM-developed mobile application, to fit the Mongolian context, contributing to the country’s efforts to prevent Mongolian nationals from falling victims to human trafficking abroad.
The application will serve as a central portal to empower migrations to take charge of their journey abroad and reduce their dependency on unauthorized entities and processes. It will provide comprehensive pre-departure and post-arrival information of the seven most common destinations for Mongolians – the People’s Republic of China, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of Turkey, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Kingdom of Norway, and the Swiss Confederation.
MigApp allows migrants to access necessary information on visa, health, travel regulations, and contact details of relevant government agencies and protection shelters, as well as hotlines and services to report suspected human trafficking. It also offers an in-built translation feature - Dr. Translate - that allows patients to receive medical care and report violence.
By providing secure and reliable migration-related information in the Mongolian language, IOM aims to raise awareness of safe migration practices and the risks of human trafficking among potential migrants in Mongolia.
This initiative is under the “Strengthening Mongolia’s Efforts to Prevent and Respond to Human Trafficking” project implemented by IOM, with support from the Government of the Netherlands.
